The government does not invest the NICs, however, it is Pay As you Go scheme. If you pay NICs for at least 30 years, you will get your full state pension, which is currently £221.20 (tax year 24-25). You will need to ensure that you have paid enough NICs to qualify for the full state pension. You just need to visit the government website to check your NICs and what you would expect to get when you reach your state pension age.

Private Pension:

This is a plan that you start yourself, you choose the provider, the investment risk, and the level of contributions. This private pension plan could be a standard Personal Pension Plan (PPP) or a SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension), where you can invest in commercial properties, single shares and so many more. More than likely you will need to seek a financial advice to guide you through this process and to review your plan on a regular basis to ensure it is on track.

Workplace Pension:

If you work for an employer, then it is more than likely that you are a member of your employer’s pension scheme. You make contributions from your salary into the pension scheme and your employer does the same. Normally, you do not choose the risk level or the pension provider. Joining your employer’s pension scheme is important, as you will receive your employer’s pension contributions as well as yours and normally the policy fees and charges are low.

The main two things that affect the pension pot in a private pension or a workplace pension are fees associated with your pension plan and the investment performance during the life of the pension plan. If the fees and charges are high, they will eat into the growth of your pension plan. If the pension plan does not grow over the years, then you will not be able to build a pension pot that can be used when you retire to generate enough pension income. Therefore, investment performance is vitally important.

Your pension plan could be a good one to start with, however, without regular reviews from your financial adviser, your pension plan could lag in terms of performance.

The best pension plan is the one that is on track to provide you with the retirement income that you seek. As a rule of thumb, you should be aiming at a retirement income of two thirds of your salary. Others would suggest between 50-70% of your salary before retirement, so if your salary before retirement was £60K, then you would aim to have a pension income of between £30K and £42K per annum. To achieve that, you will need to start your retirement planning as soon as possible. It is NEVER too early to start your retirement planning. The earlier you start your pension plans the less initial contributions you will need to pay into it and vice versa.

There are so many theories regarding how much money you will need at retirement, however, I think it all depends on what type of retirement you are looking to have and how much income you will need to achieve it.

One theory would say that you will need to build a pension fund that is worth ten times your average salary during your career, so if your average career salary is £35K, then you need to build a pension pot of £350K.

Other theory would suggest that you work it backwards, so if you will need £25K as a pension income at retirement, not considering your state pension, and you will need to have this level of income say for 20 years, then you need a pension pot of £500K (£25K x 20 years).

You need to start your pension planning as soon as possible, you need to contribute towards your state pension, you will need to join your workplace pension and if you are a self-employed person, then you need to start a pension plan as soon possible.

Understanding the Different Types of Pension Plans in the UK

Here we take a more in-depth look at State Pensions, Private Pension schemes, and Workplace Pensions, while also giving additional clarity on contribution levels, risks, charges, investment options, and long term considerations.

What Should You Know About the State Pension?

The State Pension forms the foundation of many people’s retirement savings. It is paid by the government once you reach the State Pension age, provided you have built enough qualifying National Insurance contributions. You build eligibility throughout your working life, and every qualifying year increases your future entitlement.

The State Pension is not based on the money you have personally saved or invested. Instead, it reflects what you have paid throughout your working life. For many people, it acts as a safety net rather than a complete retirement income. This is why most people also use other pension schemes such as workplace pension schemes or personal pensions to build a larger pension pot alongside it.

How Do You Qualify for the State Pension?

You qualify by paying National Insurance contributions or receiving National Insurance credits. To receive the full State Pension, you usually need 35 qualifying years. Many people have fewer years if they were self employed, worked part time or had significant breaks in employment.

The State Pension age continues to rise, which means people have more incentive to grow other pension savings so that they do not rely solely on the amount paid by the State Pension.

What Are the Tax Implications of Receiving the State Pension?

You may need to pay tax on your State Pension depending on your total income during retirement. Your State Pension counts towards your income tax threshold, and if your combined income from pensions and other assets exceeds this, you will pay income tax.

For some people, this means structuring pension withdrawals carefully to minimise tax implications. A financial adviser may help you understand how to balance your tax free lump sum from personal pensions with the State Pension to reduce how much income tax you pay.

What Are Private Pensions and How Do They Work?

A private pension is a pension scheme that you set up yourself rather than through an employer. Private pension schemes offer significant flexibility and can be ideal for people who want more control over their retirement savings or those who are self-employed. A private pension pot grows through your own contributions, tax relief and pension investments.

Many people choose personal pension plans to supplement workplace pensions, especially if they want extra savings, multiple investment options or a single pot to consolidate old pensions.

Different Types of Private Pension Schemes

When you look at private pensions, you will usually come across three main types:

1. Personal Pensions

Personal pensions are a form of private pension that you arrange directly with a pension provider. You pay money into the plan, the provider invests it in funds and you receive tax relief on contributions. Personal pensions are well suited to people who want long term investments but do not want to choose every investment themselves.

2. Self Invested Personal Pensions

A Self Invested Personal Pension, often known as a SIPP, gives you more control over where your money is invested. Many experienced investors prefer self-invested personal pensions because they can choose their own investments, global shares, bonds, commercial property and other assets. SIPPs allow people to manage their own investments rather than relying on standard investment choices from a provider.

Self invested personal pensions typically suit people who want more control, are familiar with investing and are comfortable managing long term investments independently. There are usually fees attached and scheme charges may be higher due to the wider investment choices.

3. Other Private Pension Schemes

There are also stakeholder pensions and other private pension schemes that may have lower fees or flexible payments. These can be particularly useful for people who want straightforward pension savings without complex investment decisions.

How Are Private Pensions Protected?

Private pensions are normally protected under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. If your pension provider fails, the FSCS may cover your pension up to certain limits. This gives many people reassurance that their retirement savings are protected. You should always check the details with your pension provider and ensure that your plan falls within the FSCS protection rules.

What Are the Benefits of Private Pensions?

Private pensions offer powerful benefits.

You receive tax relief arrangements on pension contributions.

You can pay money in at your own pace.

You can have more control over your investment strategy.

You can consolidate old pensions into a new scheme.

You may access a tax free lump sum when you start drawing from your pension.

You can reduce inheritance tax in some cases by leaving pension savings to beneficiaries.

Because private pensions grow through money invested over many years, the earlier you begin, the more potential growth you will receive.

What Should You Know About Workplace Pensions?

A workplace pension is a pension scheme arranged by your employer. Eligible employees are enrolled automatically through a process known as automatic enrolment. Both you and your employer pay money into your pension pot, and you also receive tax relief on contributions.

Workplace pensions form a key part of retirement savings for most people because the employer contributions act as free extra savings that you would not receive through a private pension alone.

Types of Workplace Pensions

Workplace pensions are usually one of the following:

1. Defined Contribution Pensions

Defined contribution pensions are the most common type of workplace pension. Your pension pot depends on the money contributed and the performance of investments. You choose contribution levels, your employer pays into the scheme and the money is invested in funds chosen by the provider. When you reach a certain age, you can start drawing benefits from your pot and take a tax free lump sum if available.

2. Defined Benefit Pensions

Defined benefit pensions, sometimes called final salary pensions, pay you a guaranteed income in retirement based on your salary and length of employment. These schemes are considered very valuable and come with fewer investment risks. However, they are far less common today due to high long term costs for employers.

How Are Workplace Pensions Regulated?

The Pensions Regulator oversees workplace pension schemes. Its role is to ensure employers meet their obligations, contribute correctly and manage schemes responsibly. Employers must enrol eligible employees, contribute the minimum required amount and ensure that investment options and scheme charges are clearly communicated.

What Are Workplace Pension Costs and Charges?

Workplace pensions may include scheme charges, fees for investments and other charges that reduce the growth of your pension pot. Some people prefer to transfer to other providers with lower fees or more control over investments. Always check exit fees or conditions attached before switching to a new provider.

The actual pension income will be calculated based on a number of factors in addition to your salary, these factors include the number of years that you worked for that employer while you were a member in the DB pension scheme and the other factor is the pension scheme’s accrual rate. Another main advantage of the DB schemes is that the pension income is guaranteed for the rest of your life, providing the actual pension scheme has remained funded. So, there is no concern that the money would run out during your lifetime.

There is no right or wrong answer in terms of shall you transfer your DB pension or not, as it will be based on how you weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of the transfer and it will be based on your individual circumstances and financial objectives. If someone you know managed to transfer their DB pension scheme, it does not mean that transferring your DB pension is suitable for you and your circumstances. You need the expertise of the regulated financial adviser to guide you through your pension rights and provide you with a proper advice on which way would be the best for you.

The law states that if you want to transfer a DB pension scheme with a transfer value of £30,000 or more, you must seek a financial advice. The financial adviser will assess your personal and financial circumstances, and they will look at your retirement planning in general before advising you if giving up those valuable guarantees that are provided by the DB schemes is the right thing for you or not.

Not all financial adviser can provide advice on DB pension scheme transfers, they need to be a Pension Transfer Specialist (PTS) in order to provide this type of critical advice, and they need to hold the right PII (Professional Indemnity Insurance), so if the advice was not suitable, then you can be compensated.

This is one of the most common questions about pension contributions and one of the most difficult too, as it has so many variables. How much pension you will need will depend on how long you will live, no one knows, what type of retirement you are aiming for, and your current income.

However, we will use the standard government answer for that, which is you need to half your age and this figure is how much you need to contribute of your income. For example, if you are 30 years old, then you need to contribute 15% of your salary into your pension plan.

As I mentioned, this is a standard answer, but how much you will contribute into your pension plan is a personal choice as we all have different financial circumstances and retirement needs. You will need to think what sort of retirement you are aiming for and how comfortable this retirement will look like and to achieve that you need to start early and pay as much as you can afford to achieve the retirement that you are aiming for.

If you are not sure if what you currently have is enough and your current pension arrangements would provide you with a good retirement, it is always advisable to seek a financial advice to review your current pension arrangements.
